Yasser Shahin will join 4-time Bathurst 1000 winner and reigning Australian GT Endurance Champion Garth Tander in the proven winning Jamec Racing Audi R8 with MPC fielding the #777 Audi R8 LMS Evo.
It will be the first time that the combination comes together in a Pro/AM entry in what looks to be a promising combination in a proven vehicle. Tander & Shahin have separately had race success in Audi’s and will come together for the opening round of the new format and series known as GT World Challenge Australia.
After testing at Philip Island last week, Shahin was very positive: “I am absolutely thrilled to be in an Audi again representing The Bend Motorsport Park and what an opportunity to work with and learn from Garth." "In my maiden GT race in 2015 at Philip Island, I managed to clinch a win with Tander charging behind me for second place. 6 years later, we will share the seat at the same circuit so it’s quite a nostalgic feeling”. Tander added, “I’m really looking forward to sharing the car with Yasser. We had a fantastic test day at Phillip Island last week and only after a few laps each in the car, we learnt that we like the same things as far as car balance and driving technique." "The Jamec Racing Audi R8 GT3 was awesome at the Phillip Island GT round last year, so I am looking forward to a strong start the championship with Yasser. It’s also really important to me that we have a strong run at The Bend later in the year, considering its literally Yasser’s home track!”
MPC and Jamec Racing are no strangers to GT racing in Australia having won the last 3 titles. Balance of Performance regulations and the rules on driver pairings will all but guarantee close racing this season but the team remains optimistic of a strong performance. Steve McLaughlan as Team owner of Jamec Racing stated that the combination of Yasser Shahin and Garth Tander will prove to be a formidable combination in this new era of GT racing here in Australia. Our success in the past is no guarantee in what promises to be the most competitive field ever. The introduction of ARG / SRO management will make the series truly world class. “After a year of very interrupted racing in 2020, everyone is keen on making the most of the refreshed calendar. With 2 rounds at Bathurst and at least one home round at The Bend, we are looking forward to putting on a show at Australia’s best circuits.” said Shahin.
